Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning traveler, this list is your ultimate guide to eating and drinking like a local in Victoria.
1. Barb's Fish & Chips - Seafood Chowder
This place is an institution since the 1980’s and they claim to have the best seafood chowder on Vancouver Island…and we agree! This howder is a creamy, hearty soup packed with fresh, locally sourced seafood like clams, salmon, and white fish. Try not to go on a cruise ship arrival day as the line-ups will be long but totally worth it.
3. Driftwood Brewery - Fat Tug IPA Beer
Victoria is considered the Craft Beer Cradle of Canada and Driftwood brewery is a very popular local brewery that produces amazing beers. Locals LOVE the Fat Tug IPA – a 7% bomb of a Pacific Northwest style of IPA and served at pretty much any good pub in the city.
5. The Courtney Room - Potatoes Courtney
A more modern selection for a dish but something they have had on their menu since at least 2019. Island-grown potatoes that have been fried in duck fat and served alongside their own buttermilk ranch dressing. They are super creamy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and have become a locals favourite.
7. The Empress Hotel - Gin & Tonic/Popcorn
I know, I know, we didn’t pick their afternoon tea. We think if you are going to visit The Empress you should go for something a bit stronger, their famous Empress Gin and tonic. This purple gin has been infused with tea and it has become one of the fastest selling gins in the world! Hot Tip – you get free popcorn when you sit at the bar and it is worth the visit even if you are not a gin lover!
2. Pagliacci's - Focaccia Bread
This very popular red-sauce Italian restaurant has been slinging their famous focaccia since they opened in 1979. The best part? It’s free! They claim the well seasoned pans are what give it such amazing flavour. Go during happy hours (3pm-5pm) and get a killer cocktail and some of their bread for under $10!
4. The Dutch Bakery - Black Forest Cake
Another business that has stood the test of time, this family owned bakery has been serving the city since 1956. They make traditional German and Dutch treats and we think their Black Forest Cake is exceptional! Rich dark chocolate dotted with cherries and no skimping on the kirsch.
6. The Tapa Bar - Mussels Cha Cha Cha
Tucked away in picturesque Trounce Alley, this Spanish Tapa Bar is a beautiful place for a small bite paired with a glass of wine. This dish is one of their best – Salt Spring Island mussles tossed in a fiery tomato sauce. Buen Provecho!
8. The Root Cellar - Green Sauce
So this is not so much a dish or a drink but a grocery item made by a local grocery store that is so popular among the locals they have their own bumper stickers and tote bags. Inspired by a Peruvian sauce to go with their rotisserie chicken, this green sauce is creamy, spicy, and frankly a secret as they don’t tell you everything that is in it. So popular it has imitators at other grocery stores!
9. John's Place - Eggs Benedict
Victoria is the Brunch Capital of Canda – and this place is the grandfather of scene slinging eggs since 1984. Combined with the cozy, retro diner vibe and consistently friendly service, their eggs Benedicts have become a beloved staple in Victoria’s breakfast scene.

Bold, savoury, and perfectly balanced, this sandwich packs a punch and lives up to its devilish name.
13. Rogers' Chocolates - Victoria Cream
The famed Victoria Creams are little heritage-rich delights that have been enchanting chocolate lovers since 1885. These bite-sized confections feature luxuriously smooth whipped-cream-style centers coated in rich dark or milk chocolate. Today, there are 20 flavours, ranging from strawberry and caramel to ginger, maple, peppermint, and more!
15. The Beacon Drive-Inn - Soft Serve Ice Cream
Nestled right across from Beacon Hill Park, the soft serve at Beacon Drive‑In is a nostalgic treat that locals have adored for decades. Swirled into classic cones and often dipped in chocolate, this old‑school dessert has been voted Victoria’s best soft serve for nearly three decades. Whether you’re strolling through the park or craving a retro frozen indulgence, Beacon’s creamy, picture‑perfect soft serve is a timeless must‑try.
10. Finest At Sea - Smoked Salmon
This is our go-to place for fresh local seafood. Family owned since the 1970s, they do have a fantastic food truck out front that serves what we think are the best fish & chips in town! But what we think you should try is their smoked salmon. They smoke it in-house weekly and it is amazing. Definitely try the salmon but we also think their smoked tuna and lingcod is an underrated product.
12. Loy Sing - BBQ Duck or Pork
Loy Sing Meat Market is a beloved, specialty butcher shop that delivers authentically rich Cantonese flavours, right from the heart of Chinatown. Slow-roasted in their vintage brick oven using a secret traditional recipe, the duck emerges with deeply seasoned, succulent meat and a glossy, flavorful finish. Did you know they are the oldest Chinese-operated business in North America?
14. Ferris' Oyster Bar - Fresh Oysters
Ferris’ Oyster Bar is a downtown Victoria institution. Their fresh shucked oysters served with house mignonette, lemon, and Tabasco. Ferris offers a sophisticated, lively oyster experience.
16. Sticky Wicket - Shaft Cockatil
The Shaft is a local Victoria favourite—a chilled, creamy coffee-based cocktail made with vodka, Kahlúa, and espresso, topped with Irish cream. This “grown-up iced coffee” is enjoyed at happy hour, offering a quick and satisfying pick-me-up with a hint of indulgence. The Shaft has quickly become Victoria’s cocktail! The Sticky Wicket is also a staple in the city – as Victoria’s premium entertainment venue!
